Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA)

We have worked with MLA since the launch of the national Leading Modern Public Libraries (LMPL) initiative in 2004. The success of LMPL led to the commissioning of a similar programme for managers in Museums and Archives Services, Leading Archives and Museums.

MLA funding allowed over 650 Public Library managers at Head of Service, Senior Manager and Future Leader level to benefit from LMPL. This was an integral part of MLA's Framework for the Future policy and had a significant impact on the Public Library sector. It initiated two further unfunded programmes - Leading Libraries and Lead Now.

Since 2006, MLA has provided funding for over 150 managers from Museums and Archives services to attend Leading Archives and Museums: Future Leaders and Senior Managers programmes. This was a vital driver of the Renaissance in the Regions scheme and funding has been confirmed for a further Leading Archives and Museums programme to be delivered in 2008-09.

On behalf of the MLA, we recently piloted the Strategic Planning and Fundraising Programme for eight archive services across four regions in England. For further details on this project, click here.

In 2008, we introduced Take the Lead, a new programme for managers in Public Libraries and Museums and Archives, also funded by MLA. This programme has been fully redeveloped and will be being delivered to leaders in Libraries in 2010.
